Great Flinders Football League – A Grade Round 7 Preview (2025)

Season Reaches Halfway Point as Teams Eye Momentum

Round 7 of the 2025 Great Flinders Football League season is a significant milestone — after this weekend, each team will have faced every opponent once, providing a clear picture of the pecking order heading into the second half of the year. With three key matchups on the card, there’s plenty on the line for clubs looking to solidify their spot in the top four or reignite their campaign from lower on the ladder.

It’s also the first round back after the Mortlock Shield bye, with a special mention to all those who proudly represented Great Flinders in Port Lincoln across the long weekend. The region’s football talent was on full display, with players stepping up in both the Mortlock Shield and Norwood Cup to continue the league’s proud tradition of producing quality footballers and strong team culture.

Cummins Ramblers (6th) vs Eyre United (7th) at Cummins

Two sides desperate for their first win of the season face off in a game that could spark a turnaround. Both Ramblers and Eyre United sit winless after six rounds, but Ramblers have been closer than the ladder suggests, pushing multiple top sides and showing promise, especially at home.

This fixture looms as a golden opportunity for the Magpies to get reward for effort. With young talent blending in with experienced campaigners, they’ve shown flashes of the hard-running style they’re known for, but have lacked the polish late in games to close them out. Expect them to come out with purpose.

Eyre United, meanwhile, continue their rebuild and development focus, with their young list gaining invaluable experience each week. They've shown plenty of heart and are starting to string together more competitive quarters. A win on the road would be a huge confidence boost and a sign of progress for the Saints.

A win here would not only lift spirits but could shape the tone for the rest of 2025. Expect a high-effort clash between two sides hungry to break through.

Cummins Ramblers

Ins: Jake Skinner, Jacob Parsons, Oscar White, Cody Modra

Outs: Damon Morrish, George Pedler, Wes Bilney, Kingsley Bilney Jnr

Eyre United

Ins: Anthony Webb, Mitchell Peters, Jonah Fatchen, Aiden Sheehan

Outs: Caleb Johnston, Kobe Vlassco, Corey Waters, Brandon Waters

Elliston Districts (4th) vs Lock (2nd) at Poochera

Elliston Districts host Lock in what could be the most evenly poised game of the round. Sitting fourth with a 3–3 record, the Roosters have mixed their form but are building into the season. Playing at Poochera – where they tend to perform strongly – gives them a real chance to test themselves against a top-two outfit.

Lock, on the other hand, have been one of the competition’s most consistent sides, with just one loss from six outings. Their strength lies in their midfield depth and structured ball movement, and they’ll be keen to build on their dominant performance against Tumby Bay in their last outing.

The Roos know that if they can weather Elliston District’s pressure early and convert cleanly inside 50, they can put scoreboard pressure on any side. But the Roosters have shown an ability to match it physically, and with senior players leading the way, they’ll fancy themselves at home.

This could be a finals preview – and both sides will want to make a statement.

Elliston Districts

Ins: Zane Coleman, Jack Cavuoto, Scott Feltus, Kieren Vermeulen

Outs: Ross Bascomb, Matt Williams, Kody Rosalia, Cooper Van Doorn, Jed Kenny

Lock

Ins: Brayden Crosby, Fletcher Beard, Andrew Hetzel

Outs: Jed Durdin, Luke Durdin, Blaze Kay

United Yeelanna (1st) vs Cummins Kapinnie (5th) at Karkoo

United Yeelanna return to Karkoo looking to maintain their perfect start to the season. Sitting undefeated on top of the ladder, the Eagles have been dominant in every facet — efficient, well-drilled, and lethal forward of centre. They’ve been setting the standard and will be hot favourites again this weekend.

Cummins Kapinnie, however, are not a side to take lightly. Currently fifth, they’ve been competitive against top-four sides and will relish the chance to measure themselves against the competition’s benchmark. With several players involved in the Mortlock team, they’ll take plenty of confidence from those high-level experiences.

To challenge United Yeelanna, Cougars will need to start well, apply pressure around stoppages, and take every scoring opportunity they can generate. Easier said than done against a side as disciplined as the Eagles, but a spirited effort here could springboard Cummins Kapinnie into the second half of the season.

United Yeelanna

Ins: Matt Dyer, Mitch Jolly, Beau Maddern

Outs: Matt Crettenden, Ricky Skinner, Riley Doolan

Cummins Kapinnie

Ins: Daniel Puckridge, Levi Konitzka, Hayden Bennett, Billy Mahoney

Outs: Josh Horgan, Majoor Ackland, Thomas Phelps, Henry Turnbull

With every team having now seen each other once, Round 7 is about more than premiership points — it's about taking stock, gaining belief, and building toward a strong back half. Good luck to all clubs this weekend, and well done again to the Great Flinders reps who did the league proud in Mortlock Shield and Norwood Cup action.
